چکیده

Present mobile computing does not support the simultaneous use of multiple heterogeneous network interfaces for a single transport layer connection. In this paper, we describe a solution for channel aggregation at the transport layer, which provides increased bandwidth to mobile nodes. We present R-MTP (Reliable Multiplexing Transport Protocol), a rate-based reliable transport protocol capable of multiplexing data from a single application data stream across multiple network interfaces. Due to the lossy nature of wireless links in mobile environments, R-MTP tracks packet interarrival time for discrimination between congestion-based and transmission-based losses as well as better bandwidth estimation. The challenges to such a reliable protocol lie in the coordination of packets across streams with varying channel characteristics. Our experimental results validate R-MTP’s bandwidth estimation and loss characterization techniques. Successful bandwidth aggregation is demonstrated in ideal and lossy

IP-in-IP tunneling to enable the simultaneous use of multiple IP interfaces for network level connection striping

With ubiquitous computing and network access now a reality, multiple network conduits are become widely available to mobile as well as static hosts: for instance wired connections, 802.11 style LANs, Bluetooth, and cellular phone modems. Selection of the preferred mode of data transfer is a dynamic optimization problem which depends on the type of application, its bandwidth/latency/jitter requi...

A super-aggregation strategy for multi-homed mobile hosts with heterogeneous wireless interfaces

Most mobile devices today are equipped with multiple and heterogeneous wireless interfaces. In this paper we ask the following question: What is the best approach to leverage the multiple interfaces available at a mobile device in terms of the performance delivered to the user? In answering the question we argue that simple ‘‘bandwidth aggregation’’ approaches do not provide any meaningful bene...

Evaluation of Middleware for Bandwidth Aggregation using Multiple Interface in Wireless Communication

Although a variety of wireless interfaces are available on mobile devices, they still provide only low throughput so far. When coverage areas of those different technologies overlap, mobile devices with multiple interfaces can use them simultaneously by mechanism of Bandwidth Aggregation. However, there are some performance problems for Bandwidth Aggregation on Network Layer and lower Layer whi...

AMS: An Adaptive TCP Bandwidth Aggregation Mechanism for Multi-homed Mobile Hosts

Recently, the number of multi-homed hosts is getting large, which are equipped with multiple network interfaces to support multiple IP addresses. Although there are several proposals that aim at bandwidth aggregation for multi-homed hosts, few of them support mobility. This paper proposes a new framework called AMS: Aggregate-bandwidth Multi-homing Support. AMS provides functions of not only ba...
